Tree Stands

Tree stands were ultimately developed for the hunter to have increased visibility of their game but ensure that the intended game has no visibility of the hunter. Tree stands also ensure that the deer (or whatever game you are after) doesn’t smell you.

Tree StandBasically, there are four types of tree stands: hang-on stands, climbing stands, climbing sticks and ladder stands. Each of these tree stands has their benefits, as outlined below, and are ideal for certain terrain, which is something that needs to be considered before making a hunting tree stand purchase. Here’s some general guidelines to get you started:

  • Hang-on Tree Stands – This type of stand is very versatile making it one of the more popular tree stands amongst hunters. Hang-on, also known as lock-on, tree stands can attach to virtually any tree regardless of limbs or trunk diameter. Hunters will often say that these are quiet, which is absolutely necessary when hunting close-range game.
  • Climbing Tree Stands – Fast and quiet, these are very popular amongst hunters that seek immediate mobility without having to hassle with portable ladders and unscrewable steps. However, terrain is important with climbing tree stands. Low-level limbs will cause problems and large diameter trunks of oak and cottonwood trees may make it impossible to get the climbing cable/strap all the way around the tree. Hunters that use climbing tree stands often wouldn’t go any other route.
  • Climbing Sticks – Virtually undetectable since they hug the tree, climbing sticks are compact for transport, simple to set-up and sturdy to climb. Many hunters actually use these in conjunction with their tree stand making it easier to get up to their sitting or standing area. When secured properly, climbing sticks are safe and make it easy and quick to get up and down without making too much noise.
  • Ladder Tree Stands – Having lost out to other tree stands, ladder tree stands are beginning to be a go-to stand for hunters. Ladder tree stands are perfect for the hunter that is worried about stability and comfort. They are easily transportable but are heavy primarily due to the fact that they are constructed out of steel. This is not the tree stand for the hunter that is always on the move.
